Meet our People Operations Manager, Mac Marshall
We’re excited to introduce you to Mac Marshall, our People Operations Manager.
Visiting Media has experienced tremendous growth in the last couple of years and has gone from an organization comprised of roughly 30 employees to over 5x that number. In the last year, over 70 people have joined Visiting Media.
Initially, Mac’s responsibilities were primarily engaged in recruiting and “holding things together ‘MacGyver’ style,” as he puts it. However, as Visiting Media has grown, Mac has been at the heart of the hiring process and played a critical role in shaping the company from a more strategic perspective. Today, the People Operations department, headed by Mac, is responsible for day-to-day internal support, benefits administration, full-cycle recruitment, onboarding and offboarding, employee relationships and engagement, compliance training, and general administration of all things People-Operations-related.
How did you first get started with the company?
I just happened to begin looking for a new opportunity when I spotted the People Operations opportunity here at Visiting Media. Fortunately, I got lucky that the leadership team liked me! I remember that I accidentally left on a Star Wars background in my Zoom interview with the CEO – but he liked it.
How would you characterize the changes you’ve seen over the last year?
The changes were chaotic at times but always with the best intentions at heart. That applies across all departments. Growing pains are natural, and it’s usually the processes that are the last to change in this type of environment.
Funnily, there was a time when you could see everyone in the company calls on screen quite easily, a la the Brady Bunch. The theme song would always play in my head during All-Company calls. Not anymore! It’s cool to see how much we’ve grown.
How has your role changed over your two years with the company?
Admittedly, my role has shifted over the last two years. While I was a department of one, it took a lot of work to manage all the various aspects of the job. Most of the time, I focused on keeping things above water. Recruiting was about 75% of the job as we grew at a very fast pace. Behind the scenes, I remember the discussion about how we would manage growth. My immediate thoughts were that of excitement about the challenge ahead but also fear of not meeting the expectations surrounding recruiting, onboarding, and future employee development.
More recently, we’ve added direct reports to the department, and I’ve been able to delegate more effectively. Things have begun to settle down a bit. We try not to be a focal point of concern for our employees, so in many ways, when things are going well in People Operations, our employees won’t even know it. However, my role will change yet again as we welcome a new Vice President of People Operations in June, so I’m excited to see what happens next!
What are some of your favorite aspects of seeing the People Operations department grow over the years?
Our team has a great sense of humor, and we get along well, whether it’s a stressful day or not. I look forward to seeing them and collaborating on different initiatives. Their hard work and dedication have made our department effective, and I have to give credit where credit is due!
What’s something you think separates the people At Visiting Media from other companies?
It’s the level of care that we have for one another and our dedication to learning. If I left tomorrow, the thing I would always remember would be how much everyone cares about not just the growth of the company but of the personal growth of those we work with.
Can you share anything on the People Operations side about what’s coming for Visiting Media in the next month, quarter, or year?
Well, as I mentioned previously, we are about to welcome onboard a new VP of People Operations in mid-June. We hope to capitalize on our successes by adding a seasoned People Operations executive who can help us scale more effectively and bring in new ideas to help our department move forward into 2024 with momentum and confidence.
