Tell us about yourself.

I’m in my mid 60’s. I have been married for 43 years to my high school best friend.  I was her token brother until that changed in our early 20s.  I have three children and three granddaughters.  I enjoy traveling and photography.  My wife and I are both amateur photographers.  We have shot a couple of family members weddings – never again, what were we thinking?  I enjoy snorkeling and filming what I see.  I have two GoPros and an Insta360 camera that I like to play with.  I am a bit OCD and enjoy figuring out how to mount a camera or how to organize a camera case.  My home office is filled with items that I have collected throughout my life.  I have the clay hand print from kindergarten and a collection of expensive knives.  I am obsessed with small bags, banks and small boxes or miniatures.

What got you working in 3d photography?

I had worked for the same company for 25 years.  When the economy crashed in 2008 I was let go.  Being in my 50’s with a bad back and worn  out body it was difficult to find suitable employment.  I bounced around finally settling on a job selling Google Tours in 2013.  I disliked selling and was ready to quit.  The company I worked for asked if I wanted to learn to be a Google Photographer.  I agreed and became their Agency Google Photographer.  I eventually went out on my own.  In 2015 Visiting Media contacted the agency I had worked for to “borrow” their photographer.  They referred Visiting Media to me.  That led to a second and third shoot and the rest is history as they say.

What is your favorite shoot you have done with us?

In February 2020 I was sent to the Maldives for two weeks to shoot 360’s and to scan the Raffles and the Fairmont.  The property was informed that my wife and I are a team so that she would be able to join me.  It was a tough shoot with a couple 16-hour days and several 12-hour days.  In the two weeks we were there we had two half days off at each property.  We were able to capture quite a bit of content and enjoy some snorkeling.  On one of my snorkels I saw a reef shark not too distant from me.  One event stood out as a highlight.  At the raffles I was capturing 3D and saw that there was an outdoor shower.  I knew I could capture it as there was an overhang.  I worked down the side of the building continuing to have successful scans. Generally,  3D Scanning does not work outside. However,  I was eventually able to capture the entire outdoor pool area of the Villa.  When the client saw the model he commented “this is going to sell a lot of rooms”..  We tried to scan the outside of other villas without success which is typical.    The client then moved us from our  beach Villa to an over the water Villa which is a significant upgrade.  It was an amazing shoot at an amazing place with amazing people.

How long have you been capturing content?

I have been shooting 360’s for nine years.  I started shooting Google Tours.  After two years I found Visiting Media.

What on-site tip do you have to make sure shoots go smoothly?

I try to figure out the type of client that will be my guide for the day.  Once I know that I adjust to that personality as much as possible so that the day goes smoothly.  I think there are three types of clients. 1) The Director – Do it their way!  2) The Nonparticipant – Just wants the photographer to decide where a shot is taken or simply gives a list of rooms to shoot and disappears.  3) The Collaborator – Is very involved with the shoot.  Asks for input and works with the photographer to get the best view possible.  This is my favorite type of client.

What is your go-to productivity trick?

I try to get the client to stay with one type of photography at a time so that no time is wasted switching cameras throughout the day.

What is your favorite book?

The Godfather

Do you have any upcoming travel that you’re most looking forward to?

I just returned from my 2nd trip to Aruba and now I’m getting ready to go to Grand Cayman Island to shoot there for a week.

What do you like about living in the area you do?

I live in Sonoma County California.  It is next to the Napa Wine Country and is incredibly beautiful.  I am 30 minutes from the ocean, 60 minutes from San Francisco and three hours from the Sierra Mountains.  I enjoy a very mild climate.  I live very close to my three children and three granddaughters.  Our home is truly a family gathering place.  It’s not very big but it fits the whole family.
