Maximize Your Investment! Your Ultimate Strategy Guide to 360° vs 3D

avatar Chelsea Schroeder

Here at Visiting Media, we’re not simply selling you groundbreaking 3D and 360° visuals. What sets us apart from a traditional “virtual tour” or “3D modeling” provider is the best practices and advice from our Support Team members, who can plan and execute on a seamless user experience for you based on their years of experience working with clients facing your exact challenges.

We’re here to provide best practices to get the most ROI leveraging your combination of 360° and 3D content. Let’s explore a guide to creating your ultimate TrueTour tool.

360° Imagery

Best Uses:

  1. Presenting the WOW factor
  2. Outdoor views
  3. Storytelling within the space
  4. Rooms or venues which may need photoshopping
  5. Showcasing multiple room setups

Presenting the WOW Factor

360° images are luxury visuals which present a breathtaking, high-resolution, high-impact experience for your event and leisure prospects. The best way to leverage our groundbreaking 360° imagery is in specific locations which put your most pristine vistas on display.

Capturing Outdoor Environments

In order to portray HDR definition which exudes realness and authenticity, our 360° visuals are hand-stitched, combining a wide array of exposures for an immaculate visual presentation. While stitching together over 60 images into one seamless view, capitalizing on gorgeous bright sunlight with dynamic detail in shadows, you can leverage outdoor views at any time of day which still contains realistic and full detail.

Rooms Which Need to Be “Photoshop Perfect”

The beauty of our 360° photography is the ability to hand-photoshop fine details. For setups containing rows of linens, crisp bedsheets, less-than-flattering cords that can’t be tucked out of sight, our content team works meticulously with every photo to ensure each detail looks immaculate. Our image standards provide the best true-to-life view of an event setup or luxury location which needs to look its absolute best. Once you have that visual hand-edited to its most pristine – even more beautiful than life – you can leverage the breathtaking setup again and again.

Multiple Decor and Furniture Setups

Some event spaces are truly built to suit an infinite number of setups and themes. When showing multiple floor plan setups to sell your space in a variety of ways, 360° imagery gives you the ability to show side-by-side the transformations that can happen in your spaces. The ease of showing these setups juxtaposed with the click of a button prevents you from creating each new setup from scratch with your traditional meeting or floor plan software, which doesn’t convey that true feeling of being there.

360° is Not Ideal for:

  1. Trying to connect rooms that are very far apart
We recommend being selective with your images to portray your high-value spaces. Don’t photograph in-between spaces such as hallways, dead zones or too many plain empty rooms. It isn’t going to give you the best bang for your content buck. This would be best captured with 3D technology.
  2. Planning logistics
To view true-to-life dimensions and proximity, 3D modeling makes proximity easier to understand and convey to a viewer. 360° is perfect for painting the dream of what’s possible, 3D is ideal for constructing the dream in order for it to come to life.
  3. Empty rooms without points of interest / differentiation
If you aren’t telling a part of your brand story or showcasing certain characterful elements of your property, we don’t recommend using 360° photography for empty or unstaged rooms, unless you’re wanting to follow up the empty room with a completed setup, to give your prospect a before-and-after experience.

3D / Matterport

Best Uses:

  1. Extremely large venues
  2. Complicated rooms with many niches
  3. Planning an event which needs spacial proximity

Extremely Large Venues

When covering a large, expansive room or venue, the best way to convey your sheer sense of space would be to allow the viewer to view 100% true-to-life scale and detail and move about the space uninhibited. Using Matterport technology, you can move from within the space, view the floorplan from above, and rotate a dollhouse view of the entire facility, all through quick navigation links. When real furniture and interior features are included in this type of model, your viewer understands the depth and size of your space infinitely more than a PDF graphic or faux digital mock-up.

We offer cutting-edge 3D captured by Leica cameras – very rare systems – which are designed to scan and produce visuals of very large venues. That technology was used to shoot the 150k-square-feet WaMu Theater at the CenturyLink Field in Seattle, home of the Seattle Seahawks! With the right technology, even with an extremely large space, the detail captured is second to none.

Complicated Rooms or Suites with Many Niches

When featuring a luxury suite with multiple rooms or more complex spaces connected by long hallways, it’s best to give your prospect the ability to explore around the space freely. For an ideal user experience, use the immersive element of 3D and let your viewers enjoy a walk through your suites and lounges.

Showing Your Variety of Staging Opportunities Side by Side

For certain large event venues with many event setup opportunities, you can get creative showing your viewer all the ways your rooms can be leveraged. As you’ll see below, the variety of setups are displayed like a menu, in order for the viewer to hand-select their setups of choice.

Not Ideal For:

  1. Outdoor Use in Bright Light (UV Light Incompatibility)
Currently, 360° imagery is the ideal technology to capture bright outdoor light. As technology advances, we’ll be bringing you the latest innovations to capture 3D out of doors at any time of day. But for now, our 360° technology will provide you with the most beautiful imagery in a bright outdoor setting.
  2. Rooms With Intricate Ceiling Architectural Details
Because 3D technology is tricky to clean up, you may see some debris coming through on more complex dollhouse models. This is a part of the technology that is out of our content team’s control, so bear than in mind when selecting a space with intricate architecture, chandeliers or installations hanging from the ceiling.
  3. Rooms That Need to Look Flawless With a Little Editing TLC
Because 3D models don’t allow our content producers to hand-paint and photoshop the details in your rooms, be aware that what you see is what you’re going to get! Visual clutter such as wrinkled linens or debris will be seen in your Matterport model exactly as it’s shot with no room for post editing. Work with our property coaches on best practices to ensure your rooms are staged beautifully.

These best practices are just a starting point to optimize your immersive marketing tool. Work directly with our Support Reps to receive a customized immersive media plan curated for your unique property.
